What lasting effect did the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have on this country?

On April 4, 1968 I was living in either Orlando Fla or New Orleans when Martin Luther King was shot. My mother and father were never racist to my knowledge and as I can remember taught me to respect all people, treating them equal. And while MLK's murder came as a total shock, I don't believe it change my life.
